Summary
John is a successful sales man living the big city dream, while Michelle is working two dead end jobs searching for something more. They both lead very separate lives, until a single tragedy leads them both down the same path that causes them to rethink who they are and how they live.
Detailed Summary
The novel centers around two characters, a young man named John and a young lady named Michelle, and follows them through their respective narratives in their urban setting as they come face to face with HIV. Through their narratives the author brings to light various dimensions of the pandemic, such as studies done that show the rates of transmission between the sexes, theories regarding the origin of the virus, the social stigma involved and the importance of awareness, abstinence, care and prevention.
Excerpt/Quote From Book
"I get to the clinic. Feels a bit awkward coming here on a Sunday evening, but…oh, well. I printed out Sebastian's second poem, "Haud Voluntas," to read on the train, and I decide to read it now as I arrive at the clinic. I plan to ask him what Haud Voluntas means; maybe it's another language he speaks or something. I open the printed copy, and this is what I see:

HAUD VOLUNTAS
I slip then I fall, then I get back up again
I smile then I cry, then its back to smiles again
I reach then I touch, then I lose my grip with friends
And its then that I realize that nothing makes any sense

I think for a moment about what I've just read, and then I suddenly feel very depressed, more for Sebastian than even for myself. How can one who offers so much hope to others be so sad?"
